YOM KIPPUR
Known as Day of Atonement, Day of Judgment, Sabbath of Sabbaths.
Lev 16:2-34, Lev 23:27-32 Num. 29:7-11 Ex. 28:31-35
Synopsis: HIGH PRIEST goes into the Holy of Holies and makes an atonement or covering for previous years sins. “It is the blood that makes an atonement for your sins.” Lev17:11
Key Biblical points:
· Aflict your souls. Humble your souls. Lev 223:27, 32- Understood to mean fasting. Ezra 8:21-23
· Those who didn’t humble themselves were to be cut off from their people. Lev 23:29
· PROHIBITIONS AGAINST ALL FORMS OF WORK on pain of DEATH Lev. 23;30
· High priest wore WHITE linen garments along with purple blue ephod w/ bells & pomegranates.Ex. 28:31-35/Rev 19
· 10 times the NAME of YHVH IS SAID. (10 Commandments)
· Jubilee years always began on YOM KIPPUR Lev 25:8-13 Ram’s horn is blown
· Debts are forgiven; land is returned to rightful owners.
Overview of the day : Read Scenario from Feasts of the LORD Follow along with temple map. When it comes to incense read from scripture. Intercession provides entry.
Ø START OF DAY Remove ashes from outer altar- light 4 fires
Ø Immerse himself. Put on golden vestments. Do daily work of High Priest:
· Slaughter daily morning elevation throwing blood offering on altar.
§ Prepare 5 lamps of menorah.
§ Offer daily incense.
§ Prepare remaining 2 lamps of menorah.
· Burn limbs of daily morning elevation (BURNT) offering, daily meal offering, offer the Chavitin offering, the wine libation (drink offering)
· Offer the Mussafim: The ox and 7 lambs- all burnt (elevation offerings, along with their meal & drink offerings.
Ø Immerse himself for the 2nd time 7 don the linen vestments. Do Atonement Day Offerings:
· Do the First confession on the High Priest ox offering for his Own sins
· Draw lots (Invoke YHVH Name) for which Goat is for the LORD and which one is the scapegoat.
· Go back to the Ox & confess sins of Priesthood. Invoke the Name 3 more times?
· Slaughter ox offering.
ü FIRST ENTRANCE into HOLY OF HOLIES Perform the service of the special incense. Burn in Holy of Holies
ü SECOND ENTRANCE into HOLY OF HOLIES Get ox blood go back to HH & enter, sprinkle blood 7 times
· Slaughter he goat
ü THIRD ENTRANCE into HOLY OF HOLIES Sprinkle the he goat blood in HH 7 times
§ From outside the HH sprinkles ox blood on the curtain
§ Sprinkles goat blood on curtain
§ Mixes both bloods and sprinkles on curtain.
· Sprinkle mixture on horns of altar in outer court.
· Do confession of sins of people on scapegoat. Dispatch goat to wilderness. (When red rope supernaturally turned white, all knew the goat was accepted as sin offering.)
· Finish with ox & he goat offerings to be burned up
· READ FROM TORAH
Ø IMMERSE HIMSELF FOR 3RD TIME. Don golden vestments
· Perform the services of the burnt offerings as opposed to the sin offerings: offer hegoat, His ram, People’s Ram, burn entrails on altar.
Ø IMMERSE HIMSELF FOR 4TH TIME. Don white linen vestments.
ü FOURTH ENTRANCE into HOLY OF HOLIES. Remove the incense ladle and the shovel with burnt coals from the HH. FINAL ENTRANCE
Ø IMMERSE HIMSELF FOR THE 5TH TIME. Don golden vestments
· Offer Daily afternoon elevation burn offering
· Burn daily afternoon incense
· Light the menorah.
Traditional Key points: Ancient & Modern
· Only time JHVH was said. When Name was said, Those close to the High Priest fell flat on their face, Those far away said, “Blessed be his Name whose glorious kingdom is forever and ever”
· 3 Types of shofar blasts
· Wearing of white (6 day war occurred on Yom Kippur)
